Kyiv Mother Faces Trial for Locking Son in Toilet and Beating Him with Belt

Мати з Києва постала перед судом за жорстоке поводження з сином, тримаючи його в туалеті та застосовуючи до нього насильство.

Pre-Trial Investigation Concludes in Child Abuse Case

Police investigators in Kyiv's Desnianskyi district have finalized their pre-trial inquiry into a 36-year-old woman accused of systematically abusing her 9-year-old son. The indictment has been sent to court, where she faces charges under two articles of Ukraine's Criminal Code: domestic violence and torture. The suspect could face up to six years in prison if convicted.

Pattern of Abuse and Its Discovery

According to Kyiv's National Police, the woman engaged in a sustained pattern of cruelty against her child. Her alleged actions included:

  • Locking the boy in a toilet, where he was forced to sleep;
  • Restricting his freedom of movement;
  • Forcing him to eat stale bread;
  • Beating the child with her hands, a belt, and a charging cable;
  • Tying him up and deliberately slamming his fingers in doors.

The abuse was uncovered by schoolteachers who noticed the boy's injured arm and alerted police and social services.

"Teachers at the school saw the boy's injured arm and reported it to the police and social services, who removed the minor from the family,"
stated the Kyiv police communications department. The child has been placed in a temporary foster home with a large family, where he is receiving necessary support, and his life and health are no longer at risk.

It was noted that the boy had previously complained to police officers on the street about his mother's violence. This information was passed to the relevant child protection service, but no proper action was taken. The head of the district Children's Services also faces suspicion for failing to organize a safety assessment or take steps to remove the child, instead producing only a formal report. The press service reiterated that

"the perpetrator faces up to six years of imprisonment."

This case highlights the critical need for a systemic approach to combating domestic violence and for swift intervention by social and law enforcement agencies upon receiving reports of abuse. Cases like this underscore the ongoing challenge of domestic violence in Ukraine, which requires vigilant monitoring and a robust response from all responsible institutions. The failure of initial systems to protect the child points to gaps that need urgent addressing.

In light of this troubling case, it is essential to examine the broader implications of systemic failures within child protection services.
