Kyiv Schools Extend Winter Holidays
Schools in Kyiv will remain closed for winter break until February 1, 2024. Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko announced this decision, citing the country's severe energy crisis. The original holiday period, which began on December 25, 2023, was set to end on January 11, 2024, but has now been prolonged due to these new circumstances. This move is part of a broader national effort to manage the strain on critical infrastructure.
The extension is a direct response to a Russian Federation attack on a DTEK thermal power plant on January 13. The situation within the energy grid remains critical, with Kyiv having operated under emergency power outage schedules since January 9. These conditions make it extremely difficult to conduct normal school operations and ensure a safe learning environment for students.
Impact on the Academic Calendar
As a result of the extended break, the final school bell for the academic year in the capital will now ring on May 29, 2026. To make up for lost instructional time, compensatory lessons and individual consultations for students are planned for June 2026. The ongoing energy instability continues to disrupt education, but authorities are implementing measures to sustain learning throughout the crisis.
This decision reflects not only the current energy crisis but also the state's efforts to adapt the educational process to changing conditions. - Yuliia Svyrydenko
The government is striving to preserve educational continuity for students despite the immense challenges to safety and infrastructure. The holiday extension and planned compensatory classes underscore the necessity for a flexible approach to organizing schooling during wartime and under severe energy constraints.
