Kyiv Metro Asks People to Avoid Using Tents During Air Raid Alarms

Управління київського метро закликає мешканців утримуватися від використання наметів під час сигналів тривоги.

Rules for Staying in Metro Stations During Air Raid Alerts

Kyiv Metro, a municipal enterprise, has issued a reminder to both residents and visitors of the capital regarding the rules for sheltering in subway stations during air raid warnings. To enhance safety, 46 underground stations in the Kyiv metro system operate around the clock as bomb shelters. The average temperature in these stations ranges between 17-18°C, offering a relatively comfortable environment for those who need to take cover during threats.

On the night of June 1-2, during a massive Russian attack on Kyiv, over 41,000 people—including nearly 4,500 children—were simultaneously sheltering in metro stations. In response, city authorities are stressing the importance of following guidelines that ensure both safety and comfort for those seeking refuge. It is noted that every night, approximately 700 workers are engaged in repairing and maintaining the stations to keep them in proper condition.

Recommendations for Residents

Kyiv Metro also advises against using tents and mattresses while staying in the stations. City officials have indicated that restrictions on such items may be introduced. Instead, they recommend bringing foam sleeping pads and sleeping bags. The list of essential items to have on hand includes:

  • warm clothing;
  • a blanket or sleeping pad;
  • a supply of water or a warm drink in a thermos;
  • necessary personal medications;
  • hygiene products (wet and dry wipes);
  • for pet owners—special training pads and waste bags for cleaning up after animals.

In light of this, Kyiv Metro urges everyone to adhere to these recommendations to ensure a safe stay in the stations during alarms. Special attention should be paid to central stations such as Zoloti Vorota, Ploshcha Ukrainskykh Heroiv, Maidan Nezalezhnosti, or Khreshchatyk, as these locations see the highest concentration of people during emergencies.

Given the ongoing security threats, especially amid military conflicts, following shelter rules has become critically important. - Kyiv Metro

Kyiv Metro continues to serve not only as a transportation system but also as a safe haven for the city's residents. During these challenging times, the recommendations for comfortable and secure stays in the stations aim to reduce risks to the public and provide necessary conditions during alerts.

As the situation in the city evolves, it's crucial to stay informed about potential restrictions that may arise. Recent reports suggest that limitations on tent usage in subway stations could be implemented due to overcrowding issues. Understanding these developments can help residents and visitors prepare better for emergencies.
