Kyiv May Restrict Tent Usage in Subway Stations Due to Severe Overcrowding
Tourist Tents Crowding Kyiv Metro Platforms During Air Raids
According to Главком: Widespread use of tourist tents on Kyiv metro platforms during nighttime air raid alerts has created serious overcrowding issues. City authorities are considering imposing restrictions on tent usage going forward, as station platforms have limited space. Social media is buzzing with debate over whether setting up tents on underground transport platforms is appropriate during emergencies.
Kateryna Pop, spokesperson for the Kyiv City Military Administration, noted that the issue is complex, but it is crucial to consider the needs of people seeking shelter so that more individuals can find space during alerts and stay safe.
The average temperature inside these shelters is 17–18°C (63–64°F), which can cause discomfort due to drafts, especially given the presence of tunnels and other underground areas. On the night of June 1–2, 2026, during a massive Russian attack on Kyiv, over 41,000 people were simultaneously sheltering in metro stations, including nearly 4,500 children. Damage from the attack was recorded in eight districts of the city, affecting:
- residential buildings
- five medical facilities
- industrial enterprises
- infrastructure of the Unit.City IT park
- the adjacent Unit.Home residential complex
At least six residents were killed, and more than 79 were injured.
No official decisions have been made yet regarding a ban on tents, but the matter may be brought up for public hearings or submitted to the Kyiv City Public Council. The municipal company 'Kyiv Metro' has urged passengers not to bring bulky items that obstruct movement and could block evacuation routes.
For comfortable stays in shelters, authorities recommend bringing:
- warm clothing
- blankets and sleeping pads
- personal medications
- a bottle of water
- hygiene products (wet and dry wipes)
- for pet owners: diapers and waste bags
The situation with tents on metro platforms during alerts highlights the critical need for efficient space management during emergencies. At the same time, the growing number of people seeking shelter reflects the persistent threats the city faces. Introducing possible restrictions on tent use may be a necessary step to ensure the safety and comfort of everyone using the metro during air raids.
As the city grapples with overcrowding issues in metro stations, the recent decision to prohibit tents in the metro highlights the ongoing challenges faced by authorities. This move comes in light of heightened security concerns and the need to ensure safe evacuation routes during emergencies, making it essential for the public to stay informed about the evolving regulations in the city.
