Rising Security Concerns in Outer Space

The US Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) has released a report titled Security Threats in Space, warning that China could deploy spaceborne laser systems capable of disabling satellites by the end of the 2020s. According to the report, China aims to launch directed energy weapons into orbit that can target satellites, while both China and Russia already possess a range of anti-satellite capabilities including missile strikes, signal jamming, and cyberattacks.

Currently, China operates several ground-based laser installations designed to damage satellites in low Earth orbit. Future plans include deploying more powerful space-based lasers and advanced terrestrial systems able to affect satellites in higher orbits. Experts suggest these laser weapons could blind satellites used for imaging and disrupt infrared and meteorological sensors.

China’s Expanding Space Arsenal

In January 2021, China’s People’s Liberation Army media declared a 'golden era' for laser weaponry. Alongside this, China is developing ground-launched anti-satellite missiles, whose debris could linger in orbit for decades. Notably, the satellite Shijian-17 is equipped with a robotic arm capable of capturing other satellites. In 2022, Shijian-21 successfully towed a defunct BeiDou satellite to a graveyard orbit, and Shijian-25, launched in 2025, is set to test on-orbit refueling technologies.

China’s space activity continues to accelerate, setting a national record in 2025 with 93 rocket launches, including 25 commercial missions. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, 18 launches were conducted. These developments highlight China’s rapid advancement in space technology and the potential security challenges arising from its expanding capabilities.

The DIA report emphasizes China’s growing military power in space, which could heighten geopolitical tensions internationally.

As space assets become increasingly critical for national security and defense, China’s progress is raising concerns among the US and its allies. This dynamic may prompt enhanced protective measures for satellites and other space infrastructure, as well as reevaluation of defense strategies worldwide.

As the United States grapples with emerging threats in space, the implications of these developments extend beyond satellite security. For instance, a recent analysis highlights the vulnerabilities in the US early warning systems, which could have significant consequences for global security, particularly regarding Ukraine and Europe.
