Wang Yi’s Address Before the UN Security Council
China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, took the floor at a UN Security Council session to sharply criticize Washington’s handling of Iran and its broader engagement with international bodies. His remarks came less than two weeks after U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to Beijing. Wang stressed that
“any unilateral military action taken outside the Council’s mandate is unacceptable.”
The meeting’s central focus was the growing crisis surrounding Iran and ongoing negotiations to potentially end the conflict. A key flashpoint was the U.S. airstrikes against targets in Iran’s southern Hormozgan province. In response, Tehran accused Washington of violating a nearly seven-week-long ceasefire. U.S. Central Command, however, described the strikes as defensive in nature.
America’s Financial Obligations to the UN
Wang also highlighted America’s financial arrears to the United Nations. The U.S. has racked up roughly $2 billion in unpaid contributions to the organization, withdrawn from 31 UN bodies, and left 35 other international coalitions. These actions, he argued, have pushed the UN into a financial crisis, even as the Trump administration plans to further cut funding to the organization.
Looking ahead, Trump is scheduled to hold a meeting at Camp David on May 27 to discuss Iran-related matters.
