Threat of cancellation of Trump's visit to China

China has warned the United States about the possibility of canceling President Donald Trump's state visit to China, scheduled for April 2024. This threat has arisen in connection with the U.S. administration's preparation of a new arms package for Taiwan, which may include Patriot missile systems and NASAMS systems. The cost of this package could reach 20 billion U.S. dollars.

Earlier, in December 2023, the U.S. already provided a military support package to Taiwan amounting to 11.1 billion dollars. Chinese President Xi Jinping during a phone call with Trump urged the U.S. side to approach the issue of arms sales to Taiwan carefully. The new package includes the sale of four different weapon systems. The Trump administration planned to inform Congress about the deal already this month.

Political complexities and tensions

It should be noted that U.S. policy has aimed to support Taiwan's defense capabilities for the past 40 years. However, opposition parties in Taiwan, including the Kuomintang and the Taiwan People's Party, which hold a majority in parliament, are blocking a special defense budget of 40 billion dollars. At the same time, Taiwan's main budget for 2026 anticipates a 23% increase in defense spending.

Moreover, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State for Arms Control Thomas DiNanno accused China of conducting secret nuclear tests in 2020.

“I can report that the U.S. government knows that China conducted a real nuclear test in 2020 with yields in the hundreds of tons,” he noted.
These circumstances underscore the escalating tensions between the U.S. and China amid military preparations in the region.

The deterioration of relations between the U.S. and China indicates the complexity of the geopolitical situation in the Asia-Pacific region, where the Taiwan issue remains one of the most contentious. The military support the U.S. provides to Taiwan provokes outrage in Beijing, which in turn could lead to further complications in diplomatic relations. The cancellation of Trump's visit could symbolize an escalation of conflict and changes in approaches to international policy in the region.
