Breakthrough Quantum Network Detector Unveiled

On October 22 at 20:44, researchers at the Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology revealed a groundbreaking photon detector featuring 100 simultaneous channels. This innovative device has the potential to serve as a foundation for broadband quantum networks by significantly enhancing the capacity to detect single photons. Impressively, it preserves over 90% of quantum information, a major advancement compared to earlier detectors limited to 32 channels due to thermal constraints.

Advanced Features and Performance Highlights

The detector operates at ultra-low temperatures below 2.1 K (just above absolute zero at -273.15 °C). During a continuous week-long test, it successfully captured 80% of incoming photons with minimal false detections. To tackle heat dissipation, the SIMIT team replaced standard cables with ultra-thin microstrip lines, reducing thermal influx into the detector chamber by a factor of 21.

Further demonstrating its capabilities, the team implemented the detector in a quantum network connecting five users through 10 bidirectional quantum channels. These findings were published in the journal Laser & Photonics Reviews. This advancement unlocks new possibilities for quantum technologies that could revolutionize communication infrastructures worldwide.

This development is poised to profoundly impact the future of quantum communications by enabling a much higher number of simultaneous data transmission channels. Such enhancement is critical for achieving greater network bandwidth and accelerating progress in fields like quantum encryption and data processing—areas increasingly vital amid rising information security demands. Consequently, this achievement by Chinese physicists represents a significant step towards realizing more complex, secure, and scalable quantum networks.

As researchers continue to push the boundaries of quantum technologies, the recent achievement of linking 13 photonic qubits into a stable quantum network using superconducting chips highlights the rapid advancements in this field. This innovative work complements the breakthroughs in photon detection, underscoring the growing potential for enhanced quantum communication systems.
