Minister Klimenko's Working Visit to Donetsk
During a working trip to the Donetsk region, Ukraine's Minister of Internal Affairs, Ihor Klimenko, introduced the newly appointed heads of the regional branches of the National Police and the State Emergency Service (SES). The new regional police chief is Mykola Matviienko, while Yakov Nemikin will now lead the Donetsk SES. Both appointees bring years of service experience specifically within the Donetsk oblast. These leadership changes come as the frontline region faces sustained Russian military pressure.
Operational Briefing with Military Commanders
Klimenko also held an operational briefing with commanders from combat units of the National Guard, the State Border Guard Service, and the police. Among the meeting's participants was Denys Prokopenko (call sign 'Redis'), commander of the 1st Corps of the National Guard's Azov unit. The discussion focused on key operational priorities, including:
- Ensuring civilian safety;
- Rapid response to emerging threats;
- Preserving personnel;
- Clear coordination with local authorities;
- Components of the Security and Defense Forces.
It was noted that in March alone, units of the 1st Corps of the National Guard's Azov neutralized over 2,800 enemy troops, downed more than 5,000 hostile drones, and struck over 90 artillery systems and 400 units of enemy hardware. However, since the start of April, the situation in Donetsk remains severe. Russian forces have shelled the region more than 120 times, resulting in 19 fatalities and 47 injuries among the civilian population.
The appointment of new regional leaders for the police and emergency services underscores the Ukrainian government's aim to ensure effective governance amid escalating security threats in Donetsk. The active efforts of defense forces, including the National Guard, in combating the occupiers highlight Ukraine's ongoing struggle against military aggression and its commitment to protecting civilians. The tense situation in the region demands constant readiness from security services to address the challenges of the ongoing conflict.
As the situation in Donetsk continues to evolve, the strategic appointments made by Minister Klimenko are crucial for maintaining order and safety in the region.
