Tick Activity in Ukraine
As spring marks the peak season for tick aggression in Kyiv and the surrounding region, these parasites are becoming more active across Ukraine. They carry a range of infections, including tick-borne encephalitis, Lyme disease, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, and anaplasmosis. Olga Holubovska, a distinguished infectious disease specialist in Ukraine, has emphasized the critical need for specific actions following a tick bite.
Holubovska clarified that ticks cannot fly or jump from trees; instead, they lie in wait for a host in grass and low bushes. She also stressed that rushing to test the tick itself for Borrelia bacteria is unnecessary.
“One thing you definitely should not do is run to have that tick tested for Borrelia. This is not practiced anywhere in the world because the result of such an analysis does not influence our treatment decision,” stated Olga Holubovska.
Prevention and Recommendations
The expert recommends taking preventive measures. “What you should do, for preventive purposes and in line with international guidelines, is take an appropriate medication—'Doxycycline.' A single 200 mg dose is recommended if the tick was attached for less than three days,” Holubovska added.
She also noted that a key sign of early-stage Lyme disease is the appearance of a bull's-eye rash, known as erythema migrans, which typically develops within the first month after a bite. If this rash appears, treatment is prescribed without waiting for laboratory confirmation.
Furthermore, a rise in cases of a rare meat allergy triggered by tick bites has been identified in the United States. This can become a serious issue for those affected, as they must avoid consuming:
- pork
- beef
- rabbit
- lamb
- venison
- gelatin
- milk
- some dairy products
- certain pharmaceutical products
It is crucial to follow expert advice and exercise caution while outdoors, especially during peak tick season. Tick-borne illnesses are a global concern, and awareness of both local and international risks is key to prevention. Adhering to medical recommendations, including the prophylactic use of antibiotics, can significantly reduce the risk of developing diseases after a tick bite. The situation in Ukraine underscores the importance of preventive measures against infections that can have serious health consequences.
