Ex-Google Engineer Convicted of AI Secrets Theft for Chinese Firms

Екс-інженера Google засудили за крадіжку секретів штучного інтелекту для компаній з Китаю.

Former Google Engineer Found Guilty of Stealing AI Trade Secrets

A federal jury in San Francisco has convicted former Google engineer Linwei Ding of stealing confidential artificial intelligence trade secrets to benefit two Chinese companies. Ding, a 38-year-old Chinese national, was found guilty on seven counts of economic espionage and seven counts of theft of trade secrets.

Ding stole thousands of pages of sensitive information related to Google's hardware and software infrastructure used for training advanced AI models. The stolen materials included details on chip and platform developments that gave Google a competitive edge over rivals like Amazon and Microsoft, and reduced its reliance on Nvidia's chips. This case highlights the intense global race for AI supremacy and the lengths to which some may go to gain an advantage.

Potential Penalties for Ding

Each economic espionage charge carries a potential sentence of up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $5 million. Each trade secret theft charge could result in up to 10 years imprisonment and a fine of up to $250,000. Ding is scheduled to appear for his next court hearing on February 3rd.

Linwei Ding joined Google in 2019. According to the investigation, he began stealing data approximately three years later, after being recruited to collaborate with a Chinese tech startup. The case was coordinated by the interagency Disruptive Technology Strike Force, established in 2023 to counter such threats to U.S. technological leadership.

  • Google did not file the charges but stated it cooperated fully with law enforcement authorities.
  • Ding's defense attorney declined to comment on the case.
This conviction underscores growing concerns over the security of commercial secrets in high-tech industries, particularly within the context of U.S.-China strategic competition.

The stolen AI technologies could significantly impact the market, leading to increased law enforcement scrutiny of economic espionage cases. The importance of protecting intellectual property in a period of rapid technological advancement is becoming ever more apparent as companies strive to maintain their competitive advantages in a global environment.
