Former Kherson Caregiver Sentenced to Life for Abuse of Seven Girls

Колишнього вихователя з Херсона покарали довічним ув'язненням за знущання над семірком дівчаток.

Trial of Ex-Caregiver from Family-Type Orphanage

A 50-year-old former caregiver from a family-style orphanage in Kherson region has been sentenced to life imprisonment for sexually abusing seven girls under his guardianship. The youngest victim was only 10 years old when the first incident occurred. Despite the evidence, the man denied all charges, according to statements from the Office of the Prosecutor General and the Kherson Regional Prosecutor's Office.

The crimes came to light after several of the former wards, now adults, reported the abuse once they had left the family. During the investigation, six children were removed from the household and placed in other families. The orphanage where the convicted man worked had been operating since 2008. Following the full-scale invasion, it was relocated from Kherson to other Ukrainian regions and resumed activity in Ivano-Frankivsk at the start of 2024.

Arrest and Legal Outcomes

The suspect was apprehended in the fall of 2025 in Ivano-Frankivsk. By late September 2026, he was found guilty of multiple severe offenses under Articles 152 (parts 3, 4, and 6), 153 (parts 2, 3, and 6), 156 (part 2), and 301-1 (part 1) of the Ukrainian Criminal Code. The court handed down a life sentence for these crimes.

During a search, authorities discovered 483 photo and video files containing child pornography on his computer. As a result, the family-type orphanage where he was employed was disbanded.

This case highlights a broader issue across Ukraine. For example, in Kirovohrad region, a 52-year-old man received a 15-year prison sentence for raping a 13-year-old girl who gave birth in August 2025. He was also ordered to pay 300,000 hryvnias in moral damages. Meanwhile, in Kyiv, a 26-year-old man was detained without bail for 60 days, suspected of raping an 8-year-old boy and committing repeated sexual assaults.

The life sentence for the former caregiver underscores the gravity of child sexual abuse crimes and emphasizes the critical importance of protecting vulnerable children from harm.

The courage of the former wards in coming forward proved crucial to the investigation, demonstrating the need for trust and openness between children and law enforcement. Along with similar cases nationwide, this situation reveals a systemic problem of child abuse in Ukraine that demands urgent attention from both society and government institutions.

This case is not isolated, as similar incidents have raised serious concerns about the safety of minors in care facilities across Ukraine. For instance, in the Kirovohrad region, a man was recently sentenced to 15 years for raping a 13-year-old girl, highlighting the urgent need for systemic reforms to protect vulnerable children.
