Launch of the 'National Anti-Drone Shield' Program
The government of Colombia has announced the launch of the 'National Anti-Drone Shield' program in light of the recent US operation against Venezuela. The project, which costs about $1.6 billion, aims to establish a system for detecting and neutralizing drones within the country.
The initial phase of the program's implementation will begin on January 16, 2024. Funding for this project is included in the 2026 budget. Colombian authorities emphasize that this project will be the largest investment in the history of the country's airspace security.

As part of the program's implementation, a specialized command unit will be created to oversee technical supervision, training standards, and operational procedures. This will ensure the effective functioning of the system and enhance the level of airspace protection in Colombia.
Significance of the Program for National Security
The launch of the 'National Anti-Drone Shield' program reflects Colombia's increasing concern about potential threats from neighboring countries, particularly Venezuela, as well as its intention to strengthen national security amid regional tensions. Investments in new technology could change the balance of power in the airspace and also impact military cooperation and Colombia's relations with the US and other countries in the region.
