A First-Ever Quarterfinal at Wimbledon 2026

Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk opened up about her work with a sports psychologist and her journey toward self-worth after reaching her debut quarterfinal at Wimbledon 2026. In the fourth round, Kostyuk defeated American Ashlyn Krueger 6–4, 6–4, marking a major career milestone on the grass Grand Slam.

During the post-match press conference, Kostyuk highlighted the role of psychological support, saying:

“I’ve done a lot of deep inner work to understand myself on a fundamental human level… I realized where my value comes from. And it doesn’t come from being a tennis player.”
Her comments underscore how crucial it has been for her to recognize her identity beyond sport.

Mental Preparation and Habit Changes

Kostyuk also mentioned speaking with her coach Sandra before both the third- and fourth-round matches, which helped her handle the pressure. She expressed satisfaction with her improvement on grass:

“I’m very happy with my progress on grass. No matter how the match ends, I’ll still be glad and looking forward to the American tournament series.”

Discussing changes to her routines, Kostyuk admitted that this was the toughest challenge of her career:

“Changing habits has been the hardest thing I’ve ever had to experience or do. Playing tennis is much easier for me than doing that.”
She noted that she has sometimes slipped back into old patterns before, but is now determined to avoid that.

Reflecting on the match against Krueger, Kostyuk acknowledged the difficulty posed by the weather: “It’s incredible—I still can’t believe it happened. It was very windy, and Ashlyn is amazing; she already played her seventh match on this grass.” Despite the obstacles, she remained pleased with her performance and the crowd support: “I keep enjoying the process and I’m very grateful to everyone who came out to support.”

In essence, Marta Kostyuk not only showcased her athletic talent but also demonstrated a deep awareness of her own worth, which has been a key factor in her Wimbledon success.

Kostyuk’s achievement at Wimbledon highlights the importance of mental preparation in elite sports, especially at the Grand Slam level. Her ability to focus on personal identity and change ingrained habits can inspire other athletes facing similar challenges. Success in a sports career often depends not just on physical skill but also on inner growth and psychological resilience.
