How Continuous Sitting Affects Cancer Mortality
A study published in PLOS Medicine has revealed that each additional hour of uninterrupted sitting per day is associated with a 9% higher risk of dying from cancer. Importantly, it is not just the total amount of time spent sitting that matters, but whether that time is broken up by activity. Replacing just one hour of continuous sitting with light physical activity could lower the risk of cancer death by 12%.
Led by Frederick Ho from the University of Glasgow in the UK, the research analyzed data from 91,292 participants in the UK Biobank. These individuals wore activity monitors for seven days, giving researchers precise measurements of their movement and sedentary behavior. Health outcomes were tracked over an average follow-up period of 12.38 years.
The Dangers of Prolonged Sedentary Behavior
Prolonged sedentary behavior was defined as periods of at least 30 minutes where a person was seated for 90% or more of the time without interruption. The hazard ratio for cancer death from prolonged sitting was 1.09 (95% confidence interval 1.06–1.11). The researchers noted they could not determine the specific reason for sitting—whether it was due to work, driving, or leisure.
Our findings suggest that the health impact of sedentary behavior may depend not only on total sitting time but also on whether it is accumulated in long, uninterrupted stretches or broken up by activity.

The study authors also pointed out that 'current health guidelines largely focus on moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, but our results show that light movement should not be overlooked.'
These results underscore the importance of an active lifestyle and managing sedentary habits, especially since certain cancers—such as those of the esophagus, liver, kidney, pancreas, colon, breast, ovary, and thyroid—are linked to obesity, while others are associated with type 2 diabetes.
