Anticipated Arrival of U.S. Special Envoys in Moscow

The Kremlin is preparing for a visit from Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, special envoys of U.S. President Donald Trump, in the coming days. This trip is expected to follow the signing of a U.S.-Iran memorandum scheduled for June 19 in Geneva, according to a statement from Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian leader, as reported by Glavcom.

The American officials’ journey to Moscow may take place after the memorandum is signed. The Kremlin has not disclosed the agenda for the talks or the level of Russian representation. Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that no official communication channels currently exist between Moscow and Kyiv. He added that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky could travel to Moscow if he is prepared for a serious and responsible discussion.

Negotiations and the Role of Intermediaries

Dmitry Peskov also stated that Russian leader Vladimir Putin has not received an invitation to the G7 summit. Separately, Volodymyr Zelensky has indicated that Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich could potentially facilitate contacts between Kyiv and Moscow. Following a meeting in Kyiv, Abramovich pledged to relay signals to the Russian leadership. However, his potential role in the negotiation process depends on a decision by Vladimir Putin.

As I reported after our president’s Sunday conversation with Mr. Trump, we anticipate that following the signing of the memorandum on Friday, an opportunity will arise for two individuals well known to us—Witkoff and Kushner—to come to Moscow for a meeting with our leadership. — Yuri Ushakov

This visit by U.S. special envoys could signal efforts to revive dialogue between Washington and Moscow, particularly amid pressing international issues like the situation in Iran. Given the lack of formal contacts between Moscow and Kyiv, intermediaries such as Roman Abramovich may play a crucial role in potential negotiations. This development could also shape future Ukraine-Russia relations, especially given the sensitivity of peace efforts in the region.

As the Kremlin prepares for the anticipated arrival of U.S. special envoys, the dynamics surrounding peace efforts remain complex. Recent reports suggest a potential pause in negotiations, as highlighted in a related article discussing Witkoff’s trip to Moscow. Understanding these developments may provide further insight into the challenges ahead for diplomatic relations.
