Peace Process on Hold
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov announced that the peace process concerning Ukraine has been paused, while expressing hope that it will resume. Peskov emphasized that negotiations are currently stalled, but Moscow expects them to restart. He made these remarks in response to comments from U.S. President Donald Trump, who warned that strikes on Kyiv could complicate the path to peace.
Peskov also stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Moscow at any time. However, according to Peskov, holding a meeting outside the Russian capital would only make sense for signing a final agreement. Meanwhile, Zelensky has repeatedly insisted on direct talks only outside of Russia and Belarus.
Negotiation Challenges
The Kremlin acknowledged that talks with Ukraine are in a difficult phase. Peskov noted that reaching a peace agreement will take a long time, highlighting the complexity of the situation.
This statement from Peskov indicates that despite some optimism about restarting the peace process, tensions remain high. A key sticking point is Ukraine’s refusal to hold negotiations on Russian or Belarusian soil, which could hinder any compromise. With both sides holding firm on the location and format of talks, the next steps will be critical in determining how events in the region may unfold.
As the peace negotiations remain in a precarious state, Ukraine's Foreign Minister has outlined a critical precondition for future talks, emphasizing the need for a suitable venue that meets their demands. This development adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing discussions, highlighting the divergent positions of both nations and the challenges that lie ahead in achieving a lasting resolution.
