Fico Meets Putin in Moscow
According to the Kremlin, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico did not pass any messages from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Vladimir Putin. This statement was made by Yuri Ushakov, an adviser to the Russian leader, following Fico's meeting with Putin in Moscow on May 9.
During the talks held in the Russian capital, the situation in Ukraine was discussed. However, Ushakov emphasized that
“Zelenskyy did not send any messages through him.”He added that Fico merely provided a detailed account of his conversation with Zelenskyy.
Geopolitical Dynamics at Play
Fico was the only European Union leader to travel to Moscow for events marking May 9. As part of his visit, the Slovak prime minister laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier near the Kremlin. However, his flight to Moscow encountered difficulties when Baltic states refused to allow it through their airspace.
This meeting between Fico and Putin highlights the complex geopolitical landscape in Europe, particularly regarding relations between Slovakia, Ukraine, and Russia. Fico's refusal to relay any messages from Zelenskyy may reflect his caution in choosing words and actions toward Moscow, given the heightened tensions in the region. It is also worth noting that Fico's participation in Moscow events as the sole EU representative could provoke varied reactions among other European nations, especially in light of the ongoing situation in Ukraine.
Fico's visit was not without complications, as his flight faced significant challenges due to the refusal of Baltic states to allow passage through their airspace. This incident underscores the tensions surrounding his trip, which is further explored in our report on Poland and Estonia blocking Fico’s flight to Moscow.
