Serious clashes have erupted in Rio de Janeiro between the police and drug cartels, resulting in at least 80 deaths, including civilians. This is one of the bloodiest conflicts in the city's history.

In response to the situation, the governor of Rio de Janeiro, Claudio Castro, stated that the city is effectively in a state of war. To ensure public order, 2,500 soldiers have been sent to Rio, and police have detained over 80 people and seized more than 40 automatic rifles.

The local population is extremely frightened, and gunfire and fires continue.
