Ukrainian ornithologists included 91 bird species in the Red Book, which represents 20.2% of the total number of species. Some bird species have completely disappeared, while others are threatened due to human activity. According to ornithologist Gennady Fesenko, among the excluded species are those that inhabited forests, steppes, and wetlands.
A new edition of the Red Book is being compiled, in which four more bird species are planned to be added. The current population of bird species in Ukraine is estimated at 450 species, of which 91 are listed in the Red Book. Among the newly designated red-listed species are nesting, waterfowl birds, large grebes, and meadow buntings.
