In a related move, current Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha chose to decline the Commander's Cross with Star of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland. The Order of the White Eagle is Poland's highest state decoration. Its historical recipients include:
- Russian Empress Catherine II, who oversaw the destruction of the Polish state during the partitions of 1795;
- Italian fascist leader Benito Mussolini, who backed Adolf Hitler in the 1939 invasion of Poland.
