Dmytro Kuleba's Criticism and Andrii Sybiha's Response

Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has sharply criticized calls to revoke President Volodymyr Zelensky’s Order of the White Eagle, arguing such moves obscure the genuine threat Poland faces from Russia—the same enemy Ukraine is currently fighting. Urging Ukrainians to remain calm, Kuleba stated:

“Everything has its time.”

In a related move, current Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha chose to decline the Commander's Cross with Star of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland. The Order of the White Eagle is Poland's highest state decoration. Its historical recipients include:

  • Russian Empress Catherine II, who oversaw the destruction of the Polish state during the partitions of 1795;
  • Italian fascist leader Benito Mussolini, who backed Adolf Hitler in the 1939 invasion of Poland.

Kuleba emphasized that critics are

“hitting the wrong target,”
suggesting that ratings-driven animosity may cloud a proper assessment of the threats facing Poland. These remarks have sparked debate among political analysts and the public, as the situation demands measured decisions and careful approaches.

Growing Tensions Between Ukraine and Poland

The controversy over the Order of the White Eagle and the reactions from Ukrainian officials highlight escalating friction between Ukraine and Poland. With Ukraine at war, maintaining constructive dialogue and avoiding actions that could strain neighborly relations is critical—especially given shared security threats. Discussions around awards and recognition can shape public opinion and political dynamics, making it essential that decisions reflect the strategic interests of both nations.

The ongoing debate surrounding the revocation of Zelensky's honor reflects the delicate balance Ukraine and Poland must maintain in their relationship. As tensions rise, both nations face the challenge of navigating political decisions that could impact their shared security interests and public sentiment. Understanding the broader implications of such actions is crucial for fostering cooperation during these turbulent times.
