Emergency Alert Issued Across Latvia Due to Unidentified Drone
On May 17, an emergency warning was declared in five border municipalities of Latvia after an unknown drone illegally crossed the national frontier. NATO fighter jets were deployed to intercept the aircraft. According to available reports, the drone penetrated deep into Latvian territory before exiting the country's airspace.
The incident occurred on Sunday morning, when the first alert from Latvia's National Armed Forces was issued for three southeastern districts bordering Belarus. Approximately 15 minutes later, the warning was extended to two northeastern regions along the border with the Russian Federation. Shortly after 07:00, restrictions were lifted in the areas adjacent to Belarus, and around 08:00, the security measures were canceled in the two districts on the Russian frontier.
Airborne Threats
According to the information, a reconnaissance or attack drone entered Latvian airspace, traveling a certain distance before departing. In response to potential threats, the National Armed Forces press service stated,
“Together with our NATO allies, we continuously monitor the country's airspace.”
Notably, overnight drones struck targets in the Moscow region and temporarily occupied Crimea. Specifically, the military airfields of Kacha and Belbek near Sevastopol came under attack. Additionally, a fire broke out at the Elma technopark in Zelenograd, which houses the Angstrem factory.
