Drone Incursion into Latvian Airspace

According to Главком: On the morning of May 7, multiple drones entered Latvian airspace from Russia, with at least three foreign unmanned aircraft detected crossing the border. Authorities chose not to shoot them down due to concerns for civilian safety and the risk of collateral damage to non-military infrastructure. One of the drones ultimately crashed onto the grounds of a critical infrastructure facility. In response, Latvia’s Saeima (parliament) has urgently convened a session of the National Security Commission to address the situation.

Radar systems first identified the drones as they crossed into Latvian territory. NATO’s air policing mission was activated, leading Romanian fighter jets to patrol Latvian airspace for nearly an hour. According to Egils Leščinskis, Deputy Chief of the Joint Staff for Operational Affairs of the National Armed Forces of Latvia,

“weapons were not used because there was no certainty that civilians or infrastructure would not be harmed”

.

Leščinskis further noted that

“at least three such incidents were specifically recorded, but the facts are still being verified through our sensors and other available information”

. These events have sparked serious concern in Latvia, prompting an urgent national security review.

Growing Security Risks in the Region

The drone incursions highlight escalating security threats in the Baltic region, particularly amid heightened tensions between Russia and NATO member states. The deployment of Romanian fighters for air patrols underscores the alliance’s increased vigilance and readiness to counter potential dangers. This situation demands close monitoring, as similar incidents could carry significant implications for regional stability.

The recent drone incursion has raised alarms about regional security, echoing a previous incident where Latvia's parliament convened an emergency session following drone strikes on critical infrastructure.
