Latvia Hands Protest Note to Russia Over Drone Incursion

Латвія висловила протест Росії через вторгнення безпілотників.

Drone Incident Sparks Diplomatic Action

Latvia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Russia’s chargé d’affaires and delivered a formal protest note after multiple drones entered the country’s airspace on May 7. The unmanned aircraft, which originated from Russian territory, were detected in the municipalities of Rēzekne, Balvi, and Ludza. Two of the drones landed on Latvian soil but were not shot down due to concerns for civilian safety and potential damage to infrastructure.

Riga Rejects Moscow’s Claims

Latvian officials have firmly denied Russian allegations that they permitted the use of their airspace for drone strikes against targets inside Russia. In a statement, the Latvian Foreign Ministry declared:

“Latvia has never authorized the use of its airspace for drone attacks on targets in Russia.”

Riga also condemned Moscow’s public threats of a large-scale strike on Kyiv on May 9 and voiced objections to threats directed at foreign embassies in Ukraine.

Furthermore, Latvia reiterated its demand for Russia to halt its aggression and withdraw all military forces from Ukraine’s internationally recognized territory. As the Latvian Foreign Ministry noted:

“By waging an aggressive war against Ukraine, Russia is creating risks of security incidents across the entire region.”

In response to these developments, Latvia’s parliament, the Saeima, has urgently convened a session of the National Security Committee to assess the situation.

This incident highlights the escalating tensions between Latvia and Russia, which could have serious implications for regional security. Given the persistent threats from Moscow, Latvia is working to reinforce its defensive capabilities and rally international support against aggression. The emergency meeting of the National Security Committee underscores the gravity of the situation and Latvia’s readiness to address potential security challenges.

In light of the recent drone incursions, the urgency of Latvia's response is underscored by another troubling incident involving Russian drone strikes on critical infrastructure. This escalation has prompted Latvia’s parliament to convene an emergency session, reflecting the heightened state of alert and the need for swift action.
