Lavrov's Statements on Strikes Against Kyiv
In a phone call with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced the start of systematic strikes on facilities in Kyiv that Moscow claims are linked to the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). Lavrov also urged Washington to evacuate its diplomatic personnel from the Ukrainian capital.
According to reports, Lavrov, acting on the instructions of Russian President Vladimir Putin, informed the American side that the Russian military is beginning strikes on targets in Kyiv allegedly used for AFU operations, as well as on decision-making centers. He emphasized the need for the evacuation of U.S. diplomatic staff from Kyiv, expressing regret that the actions of European elites and the Kyiv regime are undermining agreements between Russia and the United States.
Response from European Diplomats
Meanwhile, European diplomats have refused to leave Kyiv. EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Maternova commented on Moscow's statement, calling it a 'masterpiece of hypocrisy' and noting:
'A regime that for years shelled residential buildings, museums, maternity hospitals, schools, and power plants has suddenly started speaking the language of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions.' - Katarina Maternova
She stressed that the EU will remain in Kyiv and with Ukraine, adding that 'threats to diplomats and international organizations are not a sign of strength. They embody desperation.'
- The embassies of France and Poland also confirmed that they will continue their work as usual, despite the threats from Russia.
This situation highlights the growing tension in relations between Russia and the West, especially amid the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine. Lavrov's statements about strikes on Kyiv and calls for the evacuation of diplomats suggest a potential escalation of the conflict. At the same time, the resolve of European diplomats to remain in Ukraine demonstrates their support for the Ukrainian state during this difficult time. This may indicate that the West will continue its policy of supporting Ukraine, despite pressure from Russia.
As tensions escalate, the situation in Ukraine continues to evolve. While Lavrov's recent remarks signal a shift towards increased military actions, Putin's declaration of the conflict's conclusion offers a contrasting narrative that raises questions about the future of diplomatic relations and peace efforts in the region.
