Presidential Meeting in Jurata

Ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara, Polish President Karol Nawrocki hosted an informal gathering in Jurata with the presidents of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Romania. The discussions covered several critical topics, including:

  • regional security
  • strengthening NATO's eastern flank
  • energy and transportation issues

One particularly notable subject was the worsening relationship between Poland and Ukraine.

Regional Cooperation Priorities

The meeting set priorities for regional collaboration in the Baltic and Black Sea basins. Participants focused on boosting Europe's defense capabilities and addressed key transatlantic relations matters. They also discussed developing energy and transport infrastructure in the region.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda emphasized the value of dialogue, stating:

“In this informal setting, we will also talk about this issue, which is extremely important to me.”
He further noted that
“the past matters, but the present is even more crucial, especially amid Russia's brutal war against Ukraine.”

Regarding Poland-Ukraine relations, the leaders highlighted recent events, including President Nawrocki's decision to strip Volodymyr Zelensky of the Order of the White Eagle following a controversy over a Ukrainian unit named after UPA heroes. In response, several Ukrainian officials announced they would return Polish awards, and Zelensky himself mailed the order back to Poland. Nausėda had earlier expressed willingness to mediate between Warsaw and Kyiv, provided both sides were ready.

Other significant topics included activities within the Bucharest Nine and the Three Seas Initiative, as well as the future of the European Union and the main challenges facing the bloc.

This meeting underscores the growing importance of regional cooperation in the context of Eastern European security, especially amid ongoing Russian aggression. The strain in Polish-Ukrainian relations highlights the need for dialogue and diplomacy to maintain stability in the region. Seeking paths to reconciliation, the participants also stressed the importance of strengthening defense capabilities and energy independence for Baltic and Black Sea region countries, which could have far-reaching implications for Europe's overall security.

As tensions rise between Poland and Ukraine, the implications of these developments resonate beyond the immediate region. This situation mirrors other critical diplomatic interactions, such as the recent emergency meeting between Putin and Lukashenko, which was sparked by remarks from Ukrainian President Zelenskyy.
