Child Injury Rates Surge in Ukraine
As summer vacations begin in Ukraine, hospitals are reporting a sharp increase in children injured while using e-scooters, motorcycles, and bicycles. According to the National Children's Specialized Hospital Okhmatdyt, up to 30% of all visits to its emergency and trauma departments now involve children with severe injuries. Doctors have already recorded the first fatal case of the season.
These alarming trends in pediatric injuries have sparked widespread concern. Over the past five years, Ukrainian courts have heard at least 130 cases related to traffic accidents involving e-scooters. Notably, 34% of these cases were filed in 2023 alone. Meanwhile, fines for e-scooter riders range from just 340 to 850 hryvnias (roughly $9 to $22 USD).
Regulating E-Scooter Use
In May 2025, the Kyiv City Council explored new regulations for e-scooters and e-bikes. That September, Ivano-Frankivsk became the first Ukrainian city to ban e-scooters from its downtown area. Similarly, Khmelnytskyi banned e-scooters from pedestrian zones in city parks and public spaces after a tragic incident on May 4, when an 11-year-old boy died from a fall off an e-scooter.
The Khmelnytskyi tragedy occurred at 2:50 PM in Chekman Park. The boy was riding an e-scooter on a bike path when he lost control and fell, striking his head. He was rushed to the intensive care unit of Khmelnytskyi City Children's Hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.
Experts note that a child's body is not physiologically equipped to handle the forces and impact mechanisms involved. Oleksandr Mukhopad emphasizes that even a seemingly routine fall at speed can lead to severe injuries, including:
- serious traumatic brain injuries,
- intracranial hemorrhages,
- chest and abdominal organ trauma,
- multiple displaced fractures and open wounds.
Serhiy Klymenko reports that the hospital admits severe cases daily, many requiring emergency surgery. This situation demands urgent measures to ensure child safety and prevent further tragedies.
The rise in childhood injuries linked to electric vehicles has become a serious concern for medical and social institutions.
