Violence Flares Across Mexico After Cartel Leader's Death
The killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), has triggered a major surge of violence in Mexico. The operation, carried out by Mexico's Ministry of Defense, resulted in the death of one of the country's most wanted criminals. In the wake of his death, the states of Jalisco and Michoacán have been hit by a wave of violence, including road blockades and arson attacks.

State of Emergency in Michoacán
The situation in Michoacán is also critical, with drug cartel blockades reported in at least 13 municipalities, including:

- La Piedad
Michoacán Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla convened an urgent security meeting and issued an order to reinforce the state's borders with Jalisco, Guanajuato, and Colima.
This outbreak of violence occurs against a backdrop of pressure from the Trump administration on Mexico to combat the smuggling of fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamine. The previous U.S. administration had previously considered drone strikes against cartel targets in Mexico. The CJNG's brutality is well-documented; a ranch discovered in Mexico was used by the cartel to torture and burn its victims, with local police raiding the site last September.
The situation remains tense, with law enforcement actions focused on restoring order and preventing further escalation of violence in the region.
El Mencho's death is likely to have long-term consequences for Mexico's drug cartels, potentially sparking a power struggle among rivals that could lead to more violence.
