Lithuania builds the 'Baltic Defense Line': how preparations are underway for threats from Russia

Литва зміцнює свою безпеку: деталі підготовки до можливих викликів з боку Росії

The Lithuanian army has started large-scale engineering works

The Lithuanian army has started large-scale engineering works at sites near the borders with Russia and Belarus as part of preparations for the 'Baltic Defense Line'. This construction aims to strengthen Lithuania's defensive positions in light of the ongoing threat posed by Russia.

It is known that Lithuanian military confirmed the start of engineering works at strategic sites, particularly at several bridges. Engineering structures are being installed on these bridges to secure explosive materials, underscoring the seriousness of the Lithuanian army's intentions. The fortification plan was agreed upon last July, and its implementation is ongoing.

Additional measures to secure defensive positions

To secure defensive positions, several dozen sites for storing anti-tank 'hedgehogs' have also been arranged. The military is working on planting trees along key roads, which will create additional concealment elements. Furthermore, irrigation channels are being deepened, which will serve as defensive trenches.

'Bridges and roads are chosen based on natural obstacles and their strategic importance for the defense system,' the military noted.

Major Gintautas Cyunis emphasized that 'the threat from Russia remains constant. This is one of the realities that Lithuania has lived with for hundreds of years.' Thus, Lithuania continues active measures to strengthen its defense capabilities amid rising tensions in the region.

Lithuania's efforts to strengthen defensive positions at the border with Russia and Belarus reflect the country's concern about the security situation in the region. The engineering works, in particular:

  • strengthening bridges;
  • creating new defense elements;

demonstrate Lithuania's readiness for potential threats. This may also impact the overall security dynamics in the Baltic region, as neighboring countries will monitor developments and may adjust their security policies accordingly.
