Lithuania and Ukraine Deepen Defense Cooperation

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has confirmed that Vilnius is eager to move forward with practical implementation of joint defense projects with Ukraine. He made the announcement at the Daimex Baltic 2026 defense industry conference, currently being held in Vilnius. The event is expected to see the signing of four memorandums of understanding, underscoring Lithuania’s serious commitment to strengthening defense ties with Ukraine. This marks a significant step in bilateral security collaboration amid ongoing regional tensions.

The conference has drawn roughly two thousand participants and business representatives from 30 countries. Nausėda discussed launching joint production with Kyrylo Budanov, head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, who visited Lithuania ahead of the event. On the social media platform X, the two sides exchanged views on defense cooperation, the current situation on the front lines, and regional security concerns.

“We are ready and extremely interested in leveraging the latest Ukrainian technologies and developing joint production... We want those excellent agreements we signed earlier to be put into practice,” said Gitanas Nausėda.

Lithuanian authorities are also streamlining bureaucratic procedures and introducing tax incentives for defense-related businesses, aiming to become a key investment hub for the defense industry. “Defense has been given the highest state priority,” the Lithuanian president emphasized.

Additionally, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced plans to expand cooperation with Ukraine in producing modern weaponry, particularly long-range drone systems. Lithuania and its partners are thus actively working to bolster regional defense capabilities.

Growing Support for Ukraine

Lithuania’s initiative reflects an increasing level of security support for Ukraine, especially amid the ongoing military aggression. Deepening bilateral cooperation could serve as a crucial step toward ensuring regional stability and fostering innovation in the defense sector.

The signing of the memorandums and a pragmatic approach to joint project implementation have the potential to strengthen the defensive capacities of both Ukraine and Lithuania, given the challenges facing both nations.

As Lithuania strengthens its defense collaboration with Ukraine, similar initiatives are emerging across Europe. For instance, the recent partnership between Ukraine and the Netherlands highlights a commitment to joint defense production, particularly in drone technology.
