A Looming Crisis for Millions
Scientists warn that the glaciers in the Himalayas are melting at a pace far exceeding that of a decade ago, pushing the region toward an irreversible tipping point. This accelerated ice loss is already endangering the drinking water supply and could trigger devastating disasters affecting hundreds of millions throughout Asia. In late August this year, a glacier collapse along the Nepal-China border resulted in at least 1,300 deaths, with over 5,300 people reported missing in both Nepal and Tibet.
Current Regional Challenges
The vast Hindu Kush-Himalayan mountain system contains about 40,000 glaciers, yet only 21 are closely monitored through ground observations. In India alone, there are roughly 200 glacial lakes identified as high-risk, 56 of which pose critical danger. These lakes represent potential sources of further catastrophic flooding if their natural dams were to burst.
Experts predict that by mid-century, the region will hit a "water peak," after which river flows fed by melting glaciers will begin to decline. This shift threatens water resources that underpin more than 20% of India’s GDP. Although mountainous areas make up only 18% of India’s land, they account for around 35% of the country’s natural disasters, highlighting the vulnerability of this terrain.
The situation is deeply concerning, prompting urgent calls from scientists for immediate action to prevent an escalating environmental emergency in this strategically vital region.
