Lukashenko's State Visit to North Korea

During his official visit to Pyongyang on March 26, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko presented North Korean leader Kim Jong Un with a Belarusian VSK-100 rifle among other gifts. Kim Jong Un personally welcomed Lukashenko at the ceremony, which was held at Kim Il Sung Square. The event featured Pyongyang residents and schoolchildren waving the national flags of both Belarus and North Korea, along with floral displays.

A Diplomatic Exchange of Gifts

In addition to the assault rifle, the gifts from Lukashenko included:

  • chocolate
  • Belarusian marshmallow confectionery
  • dark rye bread
  • strong alcoholic beverages
  • a decorative box for Kim Jong Un's daughter
  • a golden flower bouquet for his wife

In return, Kim Jong Un presented Lukashenko with a traditional sword and a shell-adorned vessel featuring an image of the Belarusian leader.

Lukashenko remarked of the rifle: 'Just in case enemies appear.'

This visit underscores the deepening bilateral relationship between Belarus and North Korea. Both nations, facing significant international sanctions and isolation from Western countries, appear to be strengthening their diplomatic and economic ties. The exchange of gifts, particularly military hardware, hints at potential cooperation in the defense sector, a prospect that is likely to cause concern among other nations monitoring their activities.

This significant exchange of gifts not only highlights the growing ties between Belarus and North Korea but also sets the stage for further discussions on military and economic collaboration.
