Ukraine Braces for Peak of 2026 February Freeze: Timeline and Outlook

Україна готується до найнижчих температур лютого 2026 року: прогнози й важливі дати

Severe Cold Snap Grips Ukraine in February 2026

A severe cold wave has settled over Ukraine in February 2026. The most intense period of freezing temperatures is forecast for February 2nd through 4th, with a gradual moderation expected afterward. On the night of February 2nd, most regions will see lows plummet to -20...-28°C (-4...-18°F), with daytime highs ranging from -12...-19°C (10...-2°F). In the southern part of the country, overnight temperatures will be -12...-18°C (10...0°F), rising to -2...-10°C (28...14°F) during the day.

Forecasts and Official Guidance

Precipitation is unlikely across most of the country from February 2nd to 4th. However, Crimea and the Azov Sea region will be affected by a Black Sea cyclone, bringing snow and blizzard conditions. As of February 1st, temperatures in most regions had already dropped to -20...-25°C (-4...-13°F), signaling the extreme cold at the month's outset. Such deep freezes are a recurring winter hazard in Eastern Europe, testing infrastructure and public services.

In response to the dangerous conditions, Ukraine's Ministry of Education and Science has recommended that regional authorities adjust the school schedule. Suggested measures include:

  • A shift to remote learning;
  • Alterations to the class timetable.

The dominant anticyclone over the regions is responsible for the low chance of widespread precipitation, though the situation will differ in areas impacted by the active Black Sea cyclone.

This extreme weather is significantly disrupting daily life, affecting schools and transportation. The ministry's guidance reflects an effort to prioritize the safety of students and staff. As temperatures continue to fall, monitoring official updates for further weather changes and public advisories remains crucial.
