IAEA Launches Inspections of 14 Substations in Ukraine: What This Means for Nuclear Plant Safety

Експерти МАГАТЕ розпочали перевірку чотирнадцяти підстанцій в Україні: це важливий крок для забезпечення безпеки атомних електростанцій.

IAEA Sends Technical Mission to Ukraine

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has dispatched its seventh technical mission to Ukraine to inspect 14 electrical substations that are critical for the safety of nuclear power plants (NPPs). This was announced by Ukraine's First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Denys Shmyhal. The mission’s primary goal is to assess the technical condition of these strategically important facilities during wartime.

A team of experts is scheduled to visit substations that play a key role in maintaining the continuous operation of the country’s energy infrastructure. A similar mission took place earlier this year, highlighting ongoing concerns about nuclear safety in Ukraine. The IAEA has also established permanent monitoring missions at all active Ukrainian NPPs, including the Rivne, Khmelnytskyi, and South Ukraine plants.

Status of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

The most critical situation remains at the occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), which lost external power on April 26. Denys Shmyhal emphasized that

“involving the IAEA in monitoring substations is a strategically important step to enhance nuclear safety under martial law.”
He also noted that
“attempts to destroy the connection nodes between NPPs and the power grid posed a direct threat not only to Ukraine but to the nuclear safety of all of Europe.”

This mission is a vital part of efforts to protect Ukraine’s energy infrastructure from potential threats, particularly following attacks during the past winter. International expert involvement will help ensure proper oversight of substations that directly affect the stability of Ukraine’s power supply.

The IAEA’s involvement in inspecting electrical substations underscores the importance of international support for maintaining nuclear safety in Ukraine. Amid an armed conflict and ongoing risks to energy infrastructure, such missions can help ensure stability not just for Ukraine but for the wider region. Evaluating the condition of these substations will reduce risks associated with potential nuclear accidents, which is essential to preventing catastrophic consequences.

The ongoing inspections by the IAEA come at a crucial time, especially considering the recent challenges faced by the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which has experienced power outages. As the agency seeks to enhance safety measures, understanding the implications of these outages is vital for assessing the overall stability of Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
