Request to Allow Yana Yegorian at the European Championships
The office of French President Emmanuel Macron has confirmed receiving a request from Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief regarding the participation of sanctioned Russian athlete Yana Yegorian in the European Championships. The request has been forwarded to France’s Minister of Sports for further review. The event is scheduled to take place in Antony, France, from June 16 to 19, 2026. This matter has sparked controversy due to Yegorian’s known support for Russia’s war against Ukraine, as detailed in the Commander-in-Chief’s appeal to the French president.
Background on Yana Yegorian
Yana Yegorian serves as an ambassador for the organization Zdorovoye Otechestvo, which is under Ukrainian sanctions. This group is notorious for its involvement in the abduction, deportation, and relocation of Ukrainian citizens—including children—from temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine to Russia. Additionally, Yegorian holds the rank of lieutenant in the Russian armed forces. On October 7, 2024, she appeared in a propaganda video where decorated Russian athletes congratulated Vladimir Putin on his birthday.
On her Instagram account, Yegorian has posted videos showing her wearing a T-shirt with Vladimir Putin’s image. In February of this year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky imposed sanctions on Yegorian, highlighting her unpatriotic stance amid the ongoing war.
In response to the appeal, Macron’s office stated: 'Sir, the President of the Republic has received the letter you sent him. Mr. Emmanuel Macron, very attentive to the concerns you have raised, has instructed me to assure you that he has duly taken them into account. Therefore, I have forwarded your request to the Minister of Sports, Youth, and Community Life, who will directly inform you of any measures taken.'
This situation has raised public concern and underscores the complexity of international relations in the context of support for Russia and its actions in Ukraine. The debate over allowing Yana Yegorian to compete at the European Championships has become a key element in the international response to Russia’s activities in Ukraine. It not only raises legal and ethical questions but also challenges the readiness of sports organizations and nations to make decisions that could be seen as endorsing an aggressor. Macron’s office’s reply reflects a cautious approach to this issue, given its potential for broad societal and international repercussions.
The ongoing debate over the participation of Russian athletes in international competitions continues to ignite discussions, especially in light of the recent controversies surrounding events like Russia's potential return to Eurovision. As nations grapple with the implications of such decisions, the situation with Yana Yegorian serves as a stark reminder of the broader impact of geopolitical tensions on sports and cultural events.
