Macron's Appeal to India

French President Emmanuel Macron has called on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to support a partial ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. This diplomatic request comes as India has become the world's second-largest purchaser of Russian oil, behind only China. India's strategic position in global energy markets gives it significant potential leverage in this conflict. Today, over 30% of India's fuel consumption is supplied by Russia, a dramatic increase from the mere 1% it imported before the full-scale war began.

Escalating Violence in Ukraine

In the early hours of February 17, Russian military strikes hit 12 regions of Ukraine, resulting in casualties and widespread destruction. These attacks wounded nine people, including children, and damaged more than ten residential buildings and railway facilities. A woman was killed in the Sumy region due to a Russian strike. In a separate incident in Donetsk Oblast, a Russian FPV drone attacked a civilian vehicle, killing three workers from the Sloviansk Thermal Power Plant.

“We could join forces to support the introduction of an immediate and lasting moratorium on strikes against civilian populations and civilian infrastructure.”

Macron's outreach to India signals Western leaders' attempts to find new diplomatic avenues to de-escalate the Ukraine-Russia war, recognizing India's unique economic ties to Moscow. As a major consumer of Russian energy, India holds considerable influence over the war's economic and political dimensions, making its potential involvement in peace initiatives crucial. With the humanitarian crisis worsening, such diplomatic efforts are seen as vital to mitigating the conflict's impact on civilians.
