Warming up a car in winter: what mistakes by drivers ruin the engine

Підготовка автомобіля до зимових умов: популярні помилки, які можуть пошкодити двигун.

With the arrival of cold weather, car enthusiasts face an important question again - whether to warm up the engine and how to do it properly to avoid damaging the vehicle. Experts warn: an incorrect start in low temperatures can significantly shorten the lifespan of the engine and transmission.

When the air cools to about +5 degrees, the viscosity of the oil deteriorates. It becomes thick, slows down in distribution through the system, and doesn't manage to reach all parts of the engine. Some elements are lubricated only during splashing, which is impossible until warming up. The automatic transmission is also at risk - thick oil increases the load on the clutches and hydraulic block.

At the same time, specialists note that prolonged idling is also harmful. A cold engine, running without load, actively forms carbon deposits on the spark plugs, valves, and catalyst. Moreover, the exhaust becomes noticeably more toxic.

Experts recommend adhering to a two-step scheme:

  • Short warming up in place at a temperature of about +5 degrees - 1-2 minutes;

  • In freezing temperatures - up to 5 minutes.

This is enough for the oil to start circulating, and key components to receive basic lubrication.

Further warming up should occur while driving - this is faster and safer for all systems of the vehicle. On average, the engine and transmission reach operating temperature after:

  • 10-20 minutes of driving,

  • or 5-10 km of distance.

In winter, it is important to avoid sharp starts and braking - the braking system also needs time to warm up and function effectively.

  • Do not increase the revs 'at idle' - this accelerates the wear of the cylinder-piston group.

  • Before driving, it is useful to clear the radiator and air intakes of snow and ice - this improves heat exchange.

  • Diesel owners are advised to monitor the condition of the glow plugs and the quality of winter fuel.

  • For those with a remote start, it is important not to overindulge in prolonged warming - it increases expenditures and is harmful to the catalyst.

It is important to warm up the car correctly in winter, as this affects the lifespan of the engine and transmission. Remember about short warming in place before the journey and subsequent warming while driving, to avoid problems during cold days.
