Large-Scale Assault on Kyiv and Its Surroundings
Overnight, the Ukrainian capital and the broader Kyiv region came under a heavy Russian assault involving 68 missiles and 351 attack drones. Damage was reported at over ten locations across the city, including residential buildings. The attack resulted in severe casualties: 14 people lost their lives, with 11 fatalities in Kyiv and three in the surrounding region. Around 76 individuals were injured, approximately 60 of them in Kyiv and 16 in the Kyiv region.
Aftermath of the Strike
Rescue teams managed to save 64 people, including two children. In the town of Vyshneve, located in the Kyiv region, a fire continues to burn at the site of a missile impact, and authorities are evacuating residents from the private sector. Over 400 emergency responders and police officers have been deployed to deal with the damage and assist those affected.
Ukrainian Armed Forces successfully intercepted a number of drones and cruise missiles, but they were unable to stop Russian ballistic missiles. This shortfall was attributed to insufficient supplies of interceptor missiles. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the situation as extremely challenging.
“This attack on Kyiv and the Kyiv region underscores the grim reality our country faces amid ongoing hostilities.”
Volodymyr Zelenskyy
This incident ranks among the most significant strikes on the Ukrainian capital in recent months, highlighting the escalating threat from Russia. It also underscores the critical need for international support, particularly in providing modern air defense systems capable of countering emerging threats. As the war continues, such events drive Ukraine to explore new ways to strengthen its security and protect civilians.
