Attack on Odesa
In the early hours of April 6, Russian forces launched a major assault on the Ukrainian port city of Odesa, targeting its Kyivskyi and Prymorskyi districts. Preliminary reports indicate the attack killed three people, including a child, and injured ten others, one of whom is also a child. Rescue teams successfully saved four individuals from the rubble, one of whom was a child. This attack on a major Black Sea city underscores the ongoing threat to civilian areas far from the front lines.
Aftermath of the Strike
The strikes triggered massive fires and caused significant damage to residential buildings, infrastructure, and administrative structures. A five-story building collapsed after being engulfed in flames. In another district, a high-rise building was struck, resulting in severe destruction from the fifth to the third floors. In the Prymorskyi district, a multi-story residential complex and seven private houses were damaged. The Kyivskyi district saw damage to one multi-story building, five private houses, a private preschool, a store, and 27 vehicles.
Firefighters have extinguished all blazes, but emergency rescue operations continue as people may still be trapped under debris. Canine units are on site, and the State Emergency Service (DSNS) and the city council have established a Resilience Point and an operational headquarters. Psychologists from the DSNS and the National Police are providing support. Utility services are actively clearing debris and boarding up broken windows to prevent further injuries to residents.
This assault followed another attack overnight, where Russian forces struck the Chernihiv region, specifically the Novhorod-Siverskyi district, damaging an energy facility. The war in Ukraine, now in its third year, continues to see such escalations against civilian infrastructure.
