Deadly Gang Assault Strikes Haiti
A major assault by armed gangs in Haiti's Artibonite region has resulted in a significant loss of life and a mass exodus of residents. According to police figures, the violence killed 17 people and wounded 19. However, the human rights group 'Collective for the Defense of Human Rights' reports a far higher toll, estimating at least 70 fatalities and approximately 30 injuries. The attack has forced nearly 6,000 people to flee their homes.
During a press briefing, a spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attack, stating,
"this incident underscores the gravity of the security situation confronting the Haitian population."The United Nations has called for an investigation into the actions, which have caused deep concern within the international community. Haiti has been grappling with a severe political and security crisis for years, making such violence alarmingly common.
