Comment by Dmitry Medvedev

Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, commented on the US operation against the self-proclaimed President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, expressing concern over the possible abduction of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. On January 5, Medvedev stated that the abduction of an elected head of state is a clear violation of international law. These words provoked a sharp reaction from the German government.

Germany's Reaction

The German government categorically rejected Medvedev's statements, emphasizing that they are unfounded. Sebastian Hille, a government spokesman, stated:

'We firmly condemn such threats.' - Sebastian Hille

He also added that the existing security measures that ensure the protection of the chancellor have proven effective and correspond to the specific situation and level of threat. 'Chancellor Merz is well and securely protected,' noted Hille.

The situation surrounding Nicolas Maduro is also concerning. Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, have been taken to court in New York, where Maduro is accused of several serious criminal charges related to drug trafficking and terrorism. The charges were first brought in absentia in March 2020. These events highlight the tension on the international stage and the challenges faced by countries in the context of global political instability.

Medvedev's comments reflect Russia's growing concern regarding US actions in Latin America, which may affect the geopolitical situation in the region. At the same time, Germany's reaction underscores the importance of protecting state officials and international law, as well as demonstrating Europe's readiness to confront threats from other countries. The situation with Maduro only adds new challenges in relations between states, emphasizing the complexity and multifaceted nature of international politics in the modern world.
