The Story of Christian Herrera

Christian Herrera, a volunteer soldier from Mexico, is serving in the Ukrainian military. He arrived in Ukraine in late 2023, underwent training, and participated in combat operations in the Donbas region, where he was wounded. Herrera now plans to obtain Ukrainian citizenship and official veteran status. His journey is one of thousands of foreign volunteers who have joined Ukraine's defense since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.

Herrera, who uses the call sign 'Batman,' is originally from the Mexican city of Puerto de Veracruz. Before the war, he worked in the service industry and as a security guard, and notably, he had no prior military training. After arriving in Ukraine, his first stop was the city of Odesa. Before beginning his service, he spent nearly a month in Poland waiting for his paperwork to be processed.

Combat Experience and Personal Reflections

After completing his training, Herrera took part in combat missions in the Donbas. During one operation, his unit came under attack from a Russian tank, which resulted in the deaths of several soldiers. Herrera was wounded but survived, stating:

“I was one of the few who remained alive. I think I was lucky.”

He also admits that the transition from civilian to military life was difficult and that he felt fear in battle, but continued to perform his duties:

“In battle, I was afraid, like everyone else, but I carried out my duties.”

Following his combat experiences, Herrera has gotten approximately 13 tattoos related to Ukraine, one of which is a map of the country with the date of his arrival. He continues to work towards gaining Ukrainian citizenship and veteran status, seeking a purpose and sense of belonging he says he lacked at home:

“I wanted to help the country. Here I found a purpose and a sense of belonging that I didn't have back home.”

Christian Herrera's story underscores the significance of international support for Ukraine in its ongoing war. It illustrates how personal motivations and a search for belonging can drive individuals from across the globe to join the fight for freedom and independence. His service and desire for citizenship reflect the profound life changes experienced by those who choose to become part of this enduring conflict. Such cases also contribute to shaping Ukraine's positive image internationally, potentially attracting further volunteers and fostering solidarity from other nations.
