In central Spain, in the town of Briuega, authorities are urging tourists to refrain from visiting on weekends, reports Metro. The town is famous for its lavender fields and Arab caves, but the large number of tourists during the lavender bloom creates serious problems.
„I recommend coming to us from Monday to Thursday. It is more difficult on weekends due to the large number of people. We cannot cope,” said the town's mayor, Luis Vuego.
Last Saturday, the town struggled to cope with the influx of tourists who arrived in Briuega. Other towns in Spain have also faced the problem of overcrowding visitors, however, the authorities in Briuega, although recommending tourists to refrain from visiting the town on weekends, are not imposing a complete ban.
The high tourist season during the lavender bloom brings the town about 8 million euros in just a few weeks, but the narrow streets of the town are unable to cope with such a flow of visitors. Therefore, the authorities are currently only urging tourists to limit their trips on weekends.
