Mykhailo Zhonin's Remarks on Nikita Panfilov
Ukrainian actor Mykhailo Zhonin has publicly criticized Russian actor Nikita Panfilov for his silence regarding Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. Panfilov, known for his role in the Ukrainian series 'The Dog', lived in Ukraine for roughly seven years, where he married, had a church wedding, and baptized his child. However, since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, Panfilov has been living in Russia and has refused to comment on the war.
Addressing Panfilov directly, Zhonin stated:
“Nikita, how can you stay silent? What politics are you talking about? We have rockets here, our people are being killed.” - Mykhailo Zhonin
He stressed that the situation in Ukraine is critical and demands attention, to which Panfilov reportedly replied, “Just don't go there. It's all politics.” Zhonin emphasized that the aggression against Ukraine is not a political matter but a profound and horrific reality for its citizens.
Panfilov's Status and Zhonin's Accident
Nikita Panfilov is listed in the 'Peacemaker' database due to his visits to temporarily occupied Crimea. He had previously declined trips to Crimea to keep his role in 'The Dog'. Until February 24, 2022, Panfilov was actively involved in Ukrainian projects, but since then, according to Zhonin, he has stopped commenting on the war. The last conversation between the two actors occurred at the invasion's outset.
It is worth noting that Mykhailo Zhonin was recently involved in a car accident in Kyiv's Dnipro district. The crash involved three vehicles—a Volkswagen, a Mercedes, and a Subaru—after the Volkswagen driver lost control and struck two parked cars. This incident underscores the precarious reality of life in Ukraine during the war, lending further gravity to Zhonin's critique of Panfilov's silence. His comments highlight the urgent need for public figures to acknowledge the aggression Ukraine faces daily.
This situation illustrates a deep divide among artists and cultural figures, who either openly oppose the aggression or attempt to remain on the sidelines. During wartime, the stance of public personalities can significantly influence society, shaping public perception and emotional responses. Zhonin's statement reflects the profound distress of Ukrainians and their desire for justice and support in their struggle for independence, a sentiment widely shared by the international community that supports Ukraine's sovereignty.
