UN condemns torture of Ukrainian prisoners: new harsh provisions of the resolution

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine expressed gratitude to the UN General Assembly for adopting the updated resolution 'The Situation of Human Rights in Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine, including the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the City of Sevastopol'. It was noted that the resolution was supported by 79 UN member states.



The resolution covers the situation of human rights in temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, condemns Russia's aggression, and demands an immediate cessation of the war and the withdrawal of all Russian troops from Ukrainian territory. The document also calls for the provision of medical assistance and exchange of prisoners.


The UN General Assembly calls on Russia to ensure unimpeded access for international mechanisms, including the ICRC, to places of detention of Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilians, guarantee them proper medical assistance, and carry out a full exchange of prisoners.

The General Assembly also calls on Russia to release all unlawfully detained individuals, including Crimean Tatars, civilians, political prisoners, and journalists.


Important points of the resolution


The resolution clearly condemns Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine and emphasizes the non-recognition of any attempts to change the status of Ukrainian territories. The document contains new provisions condemning torture, inhuman treatment, and other human rights violations.



The resolution is based on the findings of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry into Russia's Crimes, confirming the facts of enforced disappearances and torture of Ukrainian citizens. The document will serve as an important tool for monitoring and investigating Russia's crimes.
