Andriy Sibiga Addresses the Impact of Russian Attacks on Ukraine’s Rail Network
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga has highlighted the extensive damage inflicted on the country’s railway system due to ongoing Russian attacks, emphasizing the critical losses in locomotive assets and the railways’ vital role in national logistics. He urged international allies to assist in replenishing Ukraine’s locomotive fleet.
Reports indicate that Russia continues a targeted campaign to disrupt Ukraine’s transportation infrastructure nationwide. Recently, a locomotive near the Polish border in Volyn region was struck during an overnight attack. Since the full-scale invasion began, more than 500 locomotives have been damaged or destroyed, with over half of these losses occurring in 2023 alone.
Minister Sibiga stated: "Ukraine urgently requires replacements for the locomotives lost. We call on all partners to promptly support us in sourcing locomotives compatible with the 1520 mm gauge and to provide funding to accelerate new acquisitions."
He further stressed that reinforcing the resilience of Ukraine’s railway system is crucial to preventing a humanitarian crisis and strengthening the country’s endurance amid ongoing warfare.
