Ukraine's Landmine Safety Initiative
As part of a national campaign leading up to the International Day for Mine Awareness, Ukraine hosted a series of interactive safety events for children last week. These sessions took place in youth centers, kindergartens, schools, and mobile and stationary safety classrooms across the country. The primary goal was to educate children on the fundamental dangers of landmines and other explosive remnants of war. This effort is particularly critical given the ongoing threat posed by unexploded ordnance in many conflict-affected regions.
The initiative is being implemented by Ukraine's Ministry of Education and Science, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, UNICEF Ukraine, and the public organization Cultural Platform. Participants had the opportunity to experience VR sessions, play an adventure patrol game, and complete practical tasks. Special attention was given to teenagers, who practiced skills related to mine safety, fire safety, and water safety.
Immersive VR Training for the Young
A key component of the training was a VR experience developed by UNICEF in collaboration with volunteers from EPAM Ukraine and the IT Association of Ukraine. Technical support for the VR sessions was provided by the company MacPaw. Through these activities, children gained knowledge and skills that could prove vital in critical situations. The program also provided links to lesson materials and a knowledge base to support continued learning.
