Mine Safety in Ukraine: How Emergency Services Use S.T.A.L.K.E.R. to Reach a New Generation
The Scale of Ukraine's Explosive Ordnance Contamination
According to ДСНС: Ukraine is now among the world's most heavily mine-contaminated countries. This poses a severe threat to civilians, with UNICEF Ukraine identifying boys aged 14–17 as the most vulnerable group. In response, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU) is conducting extensive demining operations and critical safety education, specifically targeting teenagers.
An Unconventional Partnership with Gaming
To boost awareness and safety, the SESU has partnered with the developers of the popular game Official S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and the creative agency Rockets. Growth R&D. This collaboration provides educational materials designed to help young people understand the dangers of explosive remnants of war.
Ahead of April 4th, the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance, lessons are being held in Ukrainian schools and kindergartens. These initiatives aim to raise awareness among children and youth about mine safety and foster a responsible attitude toward the issue. According to Serhiy Reva, Director of the SESU's Department of Mine Action:
Such lessons are vital for preventing tragic incidents involving explosive ordnance.
The ongoing conflict has left vast areas littered with unexploded munitions, making public education a matter of life and death. The SESU's efforts underscore the critical need for this awareness, particularly for the most vulnerable. Partnering with the gaming industry represents an innovative approach to engaging youth, which can significantly improve how safety information is absorbed. Reaching children and teenagers with this knowledge is essential for reducing future casualties.
