German Chancellor Friedrich Merz after a meeting with European leaders, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, and President of the United States Donald Trump in Washington stated that the progress in settling the conflict in eastern Ukraine is only 2%.
'Yes, we have taken the first steps. But I will put it metaphorically: we are on a distance of 10 kilometers and we have covered maybe the first 200 meters, no more. But in any case, we are moving in the right direction,' emphasized Merz.
The Chancellor also noted that 'greater diplomatic efforts than in the last three weeks' have not been made by the German and European Union leadership.
'Let today no one say anymore that we are only discussing the supply of weapons,' added Merz.
The Chancellor urged not to abandon the goal of achieving peace in Ukraine, even under such difficult conditions.
Friedrich Merz also emphasized that the statements of Russian President Vladimir Putin indicate the complexity of the task of resolving the situation in Donbas and called for continued action to achieve peace in this territory.
After the meeting with the leaders of the countries, the German Chancellor expressed his assessment of the progress in resolving the conflict in eastern Ukraine, which, according to him, is only 2%. Merz also emphasized the importance of continuing efforts to achieve peace in Donbas, even under difficult conditions.
