The Status of Kyiv's Paton Bridge
Following a technical assessment in early March 2026, officials confirmed that Kyiv's Paton Bridge can remain in service, provided strict restrictions are followed, though a full reconstruction is urgently needed. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that the city had attempted to initiate repair works as far back as 2020, but these efforts were derailed by procurement disputes and Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The bridge is a critical crossing over the Dnipro River, making its condition a major concern for the capital's transportation network.
The last scheduled inspection of the bridge's structures was conducted in 2025 by the V.M. Shymanovsky Ukrainian Institute of Steel Construction LLC. The structure's managing authority is the municipal enterprise 'Kyivavtodorhmost'. Klitschko noted that in 2020, the city was prepared to begin repairs, but the procurement procedure was challenged in Ukraine's Antimonopoly Committee. After the full-scale invasion began in 2022, the tender process was canceled entirely.
Throughout 2023-2024, Ukraine's State Agency for Restoration and Infrastructure Development and the Restoration Service in the Kyiv region worked on documentation for a new tender. However, in 2025, the Agency reported a lack of targeted funding for the project. The city is currently in discussions with Ukraine's Ministry for Communities and Territories Development.
The Condition of the Paton Bridge in 2026
As of 2026, the Paton Bridge is 72 years old and has been in an emergency state since 2017. On March 5, 2026, the Department of Transport Infrastructure of the Kyiv City State Administration announced the bridge had been deemed fit for operation. The conclusion on its suitability was provided by experts from the V.M. Shymanovsky Ukrainian Institute of Steel Construction and 'Kyivavtodorhmost'.
"The bridge can be used - provided the established transport restrictions are observed." - Vitali Klitschko
The established restrictions include:
- a ban on vehicles with an axle load exceeding 7 tons;
- a maximum weight for a single vehicle of 17 tons;
- a maximum weight for vehicles in a convoy of 10 tons.
Furthermore, the current traffic pattern remains in force: two lanes from the right bank to the left and three lanes in the opposite direction. Mayor Klitschko also remarked that "after this, the state essentially sidelined the city and took the project upon itself, stalling the restoration work for several years."
The situation with the Paton Bridge underscores the immense challenges of rebuilding Ukraine's infrastructure amidst ongoing conflict and economic strain. The bridge's role as a strategic artery for the capital makes its reconstruction a priority, yet delays due to legal and financial hurdles continue to compromise public safety and convenience. Future steps for the bridge's restoration will depend on the concerted efforts of state bodies and the allocation of necessary resources.
